Erin Rae

Monday 4th November

Gifted with a unique ability to fuse musical genres and influences to craft songs that feel fresh and wholly her own, with her new album Putting On Airs (2018, Single Lock Records), Erin Rae has thrown down a direct challenge to the stereotype of what a Southern singer should be. Both lyrically and sonically, she strikes a fiercely independent chord, proudly releasing a deeply personal record that reflects her own upbringing in Tennessee, including the prejudices and injustices that she witnessed as a child that continue to impact her life to this day. According to Rae, “this album was born out of a need to do some healing work in my personal life, in order to address some fears and patterns of mine to allow my true feelings to come to the surface.”

SadGirl

+ Ghost Car

Tuesday 5th November

There’s an enclave of the punk world where the music still sounds like an austere distillation of America’s forlorn dream. It’s the sound of an old jukebox spinning a Ronettes 45 through a broken speaker, the kid in the garage figuring out the 1-4-5 progression on guitar, the thump of the kick drum banging in 4/4 time through a dilapidated PA.
LA’s SadGirl sound a lot those early American punks—the miscreants that preceded the nihilists. Their songs sound more rooted in the wake of Motor City soul and Pacific Northwest surf rock than in the formula laid out by The Ramones, but there is still something in their reverb-and-tremolo pop that feels like a reminder of America’s decay.

Juan Wauters

+ Holiday Ghosts

Wednesday 6th November

The pleasure of finding something new in what we already know. The strange face of someone close. The outsider we all carry inside. The unexplored path in our usual location. A secret, a hiding place, a surprise. This is what Juan Pablo brings us. He’s the persona that Juan Wauters embodies to tell another side of his story. Not long ago, Wauters released La Onda de Juan Pablo, an album that allowed him to reinvent himself and start writing a separate chapter in his exciting career. Now, as a companion and as a prequel, he releases Introducing Juan Pablo. Introducing… is a bit timeless: at the time the album was made, Wauters left it on stand-by. That’s why its title emphasizes it origin: to present Juan Pablo and, simultaneously, to reveal his inner journey.

Worry Dolls

Friday 8th November

Worry Dolls are a young female duo who met in Liverpool at an open mic night when they were 18, both red heads with guitars, on their chosen path of becoming solo singer songwriters, and both falling under the spell of ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’. Their great chemistry and love of harmony led them to starting a contemporary bluegrass band playing Nickel Creek & Alison Krauss songs. Paired for an opportunity to have their songwriting critiqued by Paul McCartney, they were inspired to join forces as Worry Dolls and could now be described with an almost telepathically linked songwriting force.

Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids

Wednesday 13th November

“The new album is complete fire – right in the moment.” Gilles Peterson

Strut presents the brand new album from cosmic jazz travellers The Pyramids, led by saxophonist Idris Ackamoor, ’An Angel Fell’. “I wanted to use folklore, fantasy and drama as a warning bell,” explains Ackamoor. “The songs explore global themes that are important to me and to us all: the rise of catastrophic climate change and our lack of concern for our planet, loss of innocence and separation… but positive themes too, the healing power of music, collective action and the simple beauty of nature.”

The Pyramids originally came together in 1972 at Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio where teachers included renowned pianist, Cecil Taylor. After forming in Paris and embarking on a “cultural odyssey” across Africa, the group recorded three independent albums, ‘Lalibela’ (1973), ‘King Of Kings’ (1974) and ‘Birth / Speed / Merging’ (1976) and became renowned for their striking live shows, mixing percussive, spiritual and space-age jazz with performance theatre and dance. After migrating to San Francisco, they disbanded in 1977. 35 years later, the band reunited in 2012 following growing demand for their music from vinyl collectors. German label Disko B released the freeform album ‘Otherwordly’ and in 2016, they released their first album for Strut, the acclaimed ‘We Be All Africans’.

Desperate Journalist

Sunday 17th November

DESPERATE JOURNALIST are a post punk band, formed in North London. They consist of Jo Bevan (vocals), Simon Drowner (bass), Rob Hardy (guitar) and Caz Hellbent (drums). Lured together by fate and a fierce sense of what makes alternative music actually really bloody alternative they started their journey at the local Negative Creep grunge club night in Finsbury Park on February 23rd 2013 and have barely looked back since.

Propelled along by Rob Hardy’s startlingly lush guitar and empowered by frankly cracking hooklines from singer Jo Bevan both ‘Cedars’ and ‘Satellite’ catch the quartet honing their sensitive-yet-crushing alt.rock sound, relishing the old school DIY dynamics but never afraid to magic up a shiny modern melody or three.

Joshua Burnside

Tuesday 19th November

Northern Irish experimental folk songwriter and producer Joshua Burnside is something of a regional anomaly. With a brooding, powerful sound echoing artists of places afar and time long gone, his enthralling craft defies local comparison in striving towards an aesthetic as much as visual as it is sonic. Balanced with a diverse palette of sounds, Burnside deftly blends alt-folk and elements of the Irish folk song tradition with South American rhythms and Eastern European influences, whilst introducing synthetic and found-sounds, synths loops and crunching beats to create a stormy world that shifts and swirls perspective like a lingering lucid dream.

Joywave

Wednesday 20th November

The second full-length from Joywave practically bursts at the seams with discomfort, a sharp contrast from the synth-pop band’s hallmark dance grooves. On 2015’s How Do You Feel Now?, Joywave’s proper debut after two mixtapes and two EPs—grooves came quantized, shiny, and pre-inflated for getting arenas full of people bouncing in place. This time, as much as the new material contains darker pockets, it’s still a world away from the sweaty intimacy of clubs, where spontaneity and human contact rule the day.

Ja Ja Ja Nordic Music Showcase

Jesse Markin (FI) + Moyka (NO) + Elias (SE)

Thursday 28th November

Jesse Markin

Jesse Markin is a Liberian-born singer-songwriter from Finland. After releasing his debut single “Blood” in May 2018 Markin has quickly become the hottest name in the Finnish urban & indie music scene. Markin’s music is a unique mix of indie pop, hip hop, soul, r’n’b and African folk.

MOYKA

Growing up in the forests of Norway’s Hallingdal Valley, 21 year-old Monika Engeseth nursed the dream – or rather, the conviction – that she’d one day be creating music. But she couldn’t have predicted the intense, electronic landscapes she’d create for her debut EP: after just a few months working in the engine room of music production, the young artist has emerged as a one-woman pop factory.

ELIAS

Elias has fought to make music in his own way and on his own terms. Not to be pigeonholed where he does not belong. To create an album he is proud of and can support all the way. The result was the album “Entwined” which contains collaborations with the Grammy-winning producers Paul Epworth (Adele, Florence and the Machine, Lana Del Ray) and Fraser T Smith (Stormzy, Drake, Sam Smith) and Elias right hand partner HYENA (Janice, Shout Out Louds) and the close friends Humble & Blisse (Skott, Silvana Imam). The album comprises twelve songs, over three years of writing and thousands of hours in the studio – but above all is it Elias.

Sink Ya Teeth

Two Tribes + Jellyskin

Friday 29th November

Sink Ya Teeth’s step up to main stage dominance at Pohoda Festival in Slovakia this summer, alongside a number of other high-profile festival dates, has already become the stuff of legend. The post-punk/ dance duo from Norwich played a headline slot to 30,000 people.

Relentless touring last year off the back of their stellar debut record saw the duo feature heavily on anyone who’s anyone’s end of year album lists, including a nod for best record by 6music’s Amy Lamé.

This time around Sink Ya Teeth return to London with their highly anticipated second record in the bag, and a new single release imminent. After selling out their last show with us at Paper Dress Vintage earlier this year, the duo move their focus to The Lexington, in what will be an extremely special night for a band on the cusp of something extraordinary.
