BBC Introducing Presents:

Plested + Winnie Raeder + Eloise

Thursday 5th March

BBC Music Introducing are back at The Lexington for another showcase of breaking UK talent, catch three up and comers in the intimacy of our 200 cap venue before they’re playing stadiums.

Plested is Philip Plested, a singer-songwriter from the UK, based in London. He started his career as part of duo Chasing Grace, and has since then penned tracks for Little Mix, Zayn Malik, Emeli Sandé and James Morrison.

Simple but enormously profound meditations, Winnie Raeder’s work has the emotional impact of Jeff Buckley, the rawness of Joni Mitchell and the emotional connection of Thom Yorke. The root of Winnie’s music is honesty, that ability to channel some deeper feeling. “I’ve always been really, really bad at talking about my feelings,” she admits. “Songwriting works a little bit like therapy for me. The beauty of music is when you feel something that resonates with you.”

Eighteen-year-old singer-songwriter Eloise has an old head on young shoulders and a “penchant for writing catchy, electronic noir-pop” (The Telegraph). She defies her youth with incredible poetic and emotional maturity; and her soaring vocals recall the intensity of London Grammar’s Hannah Reid with the streetwise swagger of Lana Del Rey.

Konradsen

Friday 6th March

Norwegian duo Konradsen combine folk instrumentation and found sound to foster a sense of familiarity, even when the music meanders… Before Eirik Vildgren and Jenny Marie Sabel were Konradsen, they were high school classmates in northern Norway. By focusing on organic collaboration, Konradsen were able to honor the many communities that have shaped their sound.

Annie Mac Presents:

Inhaler + The Ninth Wave + Walt Disco

Inhaler’s appeal is rooted in the kind of 1990s nostalgia that’s been reborn for 2020’s generation, for kids who dress like Stone Island versions of Shaun Ryder. The singles they’ve released so far are Madchester-influenced, feel-good, jangly pop-rock – like their latest single, “We Have To Move On”, which sounds like an early Killers record. There’s a purity in Inhaler’s dedication to vintage guitar music in a TikTok era.

The Ninth Wave’s stunning doom-laden post-punk sound has taken them from Glasgow to New York, Los Angeles and South By South West and back again to a coffee shop in East Renfrewshire. Formed around the long term-friendship of singer and guitarist Hadyn Park-Patterson and singer and bassist Millie Kidd, The Ninth Wave’s sudden rise has seen them support fellow Glaswegians Chvrches at a massive homecoming gig and will also see them go on tour with The Blinders and Brighton band Yonaka later this spring.

Pluck Shame’s Charlie Steen from the blood-thirst of the bull-pit into the decadence of the ballroom and you have  Walt Disco’s pirouetting, shirtless, tartan-pant wearing frontman James Potter, whose tremulous, death-on-the-dancefloor, Billy Mackenzie-esque vocal typifies the  glamour and flamboyance of Glasgow’s latest indie proposition. Merging vintage New Romantic/Goth sounds with an up-to-date, guitar-flailing urgency, Walt Disco are a bright and glossy antidote to some of their more dour contemporaries.

Amy Studt

+ Common or Garden

Monday 9th March

Singer, songwriter and multi instrumentalist, Amy Studt unveiled her series of musical chapters throughout 2019 including ‘Overdose’, the follow up to the acclaimed ‘Sleepwalker’ single, which conveys a beautiful, reflective message from a dark, dangerous and lonely place. Amy’s new album ‘Happiest Girl In The Universe’ is a narrative diary of depression, hope and redemption.

“Songs break down, distort and disintegrate, stutter and change direction, turning unexpected corners to reveal moments of the purest beauty, often in a song’s mantra-like closing coda. Their serpentine route reflecting the neural paths of their creator’s psyche.” Louder Than War

Helen Love

+ Une ft. Mark Radcliffe + Simon Love

Thursday 12th March

Ever since ‘92, Helen Love have been peddling a kind of hyperactive punk-pop that’s somewhat divisive: “the Ramones on an incredibly intense sugar high” isn’t exactly for everyone, and their predilection for cheap synthesizers, tinny guitars and shrill vocals might grate on some, but their unashamed approach to making music that’s simply fun and unpretentious is something to admire. While most bands focus their attention on singing earnestly about love and everyday grievances, Helen Love has always maintained a joyously light-hearted lyrical approach. Here, she sings about space boys on the aptly-titled, synth-driven ‘Spaceboy’, and name-drops Polystyrene on pleasingly trashy X-Ray-Spex ode ‘Thank You Polystyrene’. Helen Love’s affinity for The Ramones – the band that brought them together due to a mutual appreciation – is also still hugely prominent: Smash Hits is littered with references to them; look no further than ‘You Can’t Beat A Boy Who Loves The Ramones’, which has snippets of Dolly Parton singing “Where have all the good men gone…” – an amusing, if slightly baffling, recurring theme throughout the album. The best thing about Helen Love is that amidst the over-the-top chaos, there’s always a hint of irony – take them too seriously, and you’re simply missing the point. They’re the perfect antidote to trad-rock drudgery, and for that, we should all be grateful. – London In Stereo

Spinning Coin

+ Bas Jan + Robert Sotelo

Wednesday 18th March

SPINNING COIN are Sean Armstrong (vocals, guitar), Jack Mellin (vocals, guitar), Rachel Taylor (bass, vocals, keyboards) and Chris White (drums). Hailing from Glasgow their cascading melodicism is topped with some amazing shredding. Their music connects into a local music scene more associated with Orange Juice, Teenage Fanclub, and of course The Pastels, who release the band’s records via their Geographic Music imprint. Their music is beautifully rough-hewn guitar pop that takes in frustration, but also gracefulness and splendour, in equal measure. On February 21st, Spinning Coin will release their second album ‘Hyacinth’. A brave step forward, ‘Hyacinth’ is an album full of poetry, light and warmth of heart, and presents a band holding nothing back. Throughout there is joy in spades, but also melancholy, and a checked fury, threading the group’s political vision through their reflections on the personal and the interpersonal. Jack explains that the new songs “are about the need for love in an often very unloving world. Trying to find a balance of some kind between feelings of apathy, negativity, detachment and action, positivity and oneness.” Whilst Mellin’s songs were more pointedly political on debut LP ‘Permo’, here he has built more complexity into his writing. Ultimately Spinning Coin’s ethos stays true to itself, as Sean expands about the experiences and the motivations behind the new music: “It’s trying to connect with other people on a human level, doing something that we love, and trying to embrace the unknown.” This show sees them head to London date during their European tour in support of ‘Hyacinth’ in March!

Even as We Speak

Saturday 28th March

Even As We Speak are from Sydney, Australia. Formed in the mid 1980s and resisting neat labels, the band’s music is a quirky hybrid of accessible pop, ironic interjections, and experimental moments. After a series of releases on Australian independent labels they came to the attention of BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel. This brought them to the attention of UK audiences and began a relationship with UK label Sarah Records with the subsequent releases shooting them to prominence in the UK Independent music scene, achieving multiple top 10 positions in the NME and Melody Maker charts. Following documentary and book projects in the 2000s, there was renewed interest in the band, leading them to reform for a sold out show at NYC PopFest in 2016, release their Peel Sessions, and record a new EP ‘The Black Forest’ for Emotional Response in the USA. In 2018, Emotional Response and Rough Trade have partnered on a 25 year limited edition reissue of their 1993 album Feral Pop Frenzy, a UK tour and a whole lot more music in the pipe!
