The Soft Cavalry

+ Herbal Tea

Wednesday 3rd July

So… The Soft Cavalry. What is it? A happy accident? A lovers’ story? A crisis of faith? In reality, it’s all of these.

For Steve Clarke, The Soft Cavalry’s self-titled debut album is equally a labour of love, and the first record he’s masterminded from start to finish, with invaluable contributions from his wife, Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell, on co-vocals and spiritual/practical guidance, and Steve’s brother Michael, who produced the record.

The band’s music is a particularly British brand of intense cinematic drama. Melodic and timeless, the album lands in the atmospheric dimensions between Pink Floyd, Talk Talk and R.E.M. A record radiating midlife crisis but equally enormous elation; a helix of fear and hope, aching for resolution. A record Steve emphasises that he “needed” to make.

The Soft Cavalry is also that rarity: a musical project that began life on an industrial site in Reading.

Additionally, the album is a way of rewriting a man’s narrative, and proof that relative late bloomers (Steve was in his late thirties when he made the album) can make the record of their dreams.

Miraculous Mule

+ All Seeing Eyes

Sunday 7th July

London trio MIRACULOUS MULE deliver a slick and seemingly effortless, hard-blues driven brand of rock ‘n’ roll, but it’s knife-edge stuff. We can explain. The slick and effortless part comes from the fact that these boys have been cutting their teeth and earning their stripes over the years with a devout immersion in gothic American roots music, before that particular bandwagon arrived in town again, and again after it left. If that wagon is back, they don’t really care and neither should you. Brothers Michael and Patrick were born into a rock ‘n’ roll home with Elvis and Tammy as surrogate parents.

Born of a parade, the ALL SEEING EYES are the pride of Dayton, Kentucky. The three piece of multi-instrumentalists developed into the house band at Masonic Sounds Studios in that Kentucky river town. Housed in a Free Mason Blue Lodge, they created the new LP “In Us We Trust”, now available on Mauvias Foi Records in Europe. The trio was described as “the MC5 of the country blues” by Tav Falco after a recent show.

Fat Night

+ Quiet Man

Tuesday 9th July

Gabe, Dan, Nik, and Ted have been tight-knit friends since their middle and high school days in Orlando, Florida. After years of playing with each other in various bands, their shared love of funk and soul music led the four to start jamming together in Nik’s woodsy backyard shed. Their shared love of greasy food kept them hanging out late into the night.

In 2013, Ohio-based soul label Colemine Records released Fat Night’s “Things You Do,” a reverb-soaked single which Dusty Groove called “haunting, moody, and very compelling!” The same year, the band released their first full length, “Fat Night,” followed by a six-song EP “Lazy Days” in 2015 featuring the surprise hit Sun Go Down. Fat Night moved to Chicago in late 2016 before releasing their single Honest Man in early 2017. In December 2018 they released Question, the first single off of their upcoming full-length album. They will be appearing at North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam on July 13, 2019.

Pat Dam Smyth

Tuesday 16th July

Pat Dam Smyth will be launching new album The Last King, released on 5th July on Quiet Arch Records.

The Last King is the follow up to critically acclaimed 2012 debut ‘The Great Divide’ and, along its mesmerising way, takes in the Northern Ireland of the Troubles which formed the backdrop to Pat’s formative years; first loves, lost loves, brotherly love; a breakdown in Berlin; and a king who destroys the world. Sentiments underpinned by a desire to let go: “if it didn’t matter then, doesn’t matter now…”

As the Floyd-esque swirling synths of ‘KIDS’ open the album, mimicking the sound of the Chinooks that beat out the soundtrack to Pat’s childhood, the scene is set for an album that takes the listener deep into the rubble; no sooner have your ears adjusted to the dark than they are blinded by the light.

While the album may not quite be a love letter to the Northern Ireland of his youth, it is certainly a fling with his formative experiences and defining decisions he made.

Prison Religion

+ Hyperstition Duo

Friday 19th July

PRISON RELIGION are a hardcore noise project from Richmond, Virginia, comprised of Poozy and False Prpht. Though the two are solo artists in their own right, they collaborate regularly to make collages together that are indebted yet flippant to hip hop, punk, and techno. Working together since 2016, the duo have dived deep into the space between blown-out trap (2016’s Cage With Mirrored Bars) and contemporary destructive club music (2018’s O Fucc Im On The Wrong Planet). Since linking up with Texas-based experimental label Halcyon Veil, they’ve connected a global crewsof likeminded collaborators for a remix album including Rabit, Endgame, Swan Meat, Lee Gamble and Bonaventure. The production destroys any notion of comfort afforded in dance music, with cold industrial and glitchy hip hop textures serving as the stylistic anchor of the record. With close ties to NON Worldwide, Prison Religion are also ushering in a new wave of vocal-based club performance.

Adult Mom

Thursday 25th July

Adult Mom began as the solo project of Stephanie Knipe in a Purchase College dorm room in 2012. Adult Mom now falls between the playful spectrum of solo project and collaborative band with beloved friends and musicians Olivia Battell and Bruce Hamilton. Through reflections and explorations of the personal and hidden, the crux of the writing produced by Knipe is focused on excavation. The dredging out of secrets, putting it all in a pan, waiting for the gold to rise. Honesty and intimacy form as Knipe writes clever pop songs that offer a glimpse into the journey of a gender-weird queer navigating through heartache, trauma and subsequent growth.

The Rails

Wednesday 31st July

Recorded in Nashville and produced by Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams) the album features ten brand new Kami Thompson and James Walbourne original songs that showcase their trademark harmonies and vocal prowess. The Rails 2014 debut album Fair Warning, produced by Edwyn Collins, had critics gushing. It was chosen as Mojo’s best folk album that year and the band went on to be presented the Horizon Award for Best New Act at Radio Two’s prestigious Folk Awards in 2015. The new album lives up to expectations as we hear The Rails adopt a slightly harder edged sound that incorporate elements of folk, 60’s pop, psychedelia and soul with a distinctive British flavour. James is one of the country’s finest guitarists and full time member of the Pretenders, he also plays with both Ray Davies and the Pogues. Kami is folk rock royalty, daughter of Richard and Linda Thomson, sister to Teddy. The couple began working together in 2011 and married the following year. Other People was recorded at Room and Board Studios in Nashville and features James on guitars and keyboards, drummer Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), bassist Jim Boquist (Son Volt) and Eric Heywood (Ray Lamontagne) on pedal steel. Kami lends her exquisite voice and acoustic guitar playing to the proceedings. – Rough Trade
