For the first time we’re heading to one of North London’s hidden gems, The Lexington in Angel. It’s a retro-themed bar with a mind-boggling whisky selection, and just so happens to be one of the best small venues in London.

Leeds three-piece Drahla are an anomaly: brazenly committed to doing things their own way, the band’s sound is somewhat at odds with the current musical landscape, negating layered, fuzz-pedal driven psychedelia in favour of a kind of innovative post-punk that draws from the parentage of Wire and The Fall in their prime, in part thanks to a propensity for enormous hooks and potent bass-lines, but mainly because of an ability to subvert conventions and take it somewhere new.

Wednesday June 13th
‘Self Control’, which channels White Stripes and AM-era Arctic Monkeys via the ‘70s-inflected rock of Jefferson Airplane, is the playful and self assured debut from LION aka Beth Lowen. The single sees LION’s ferocious, Janis Joplin-esque rasp of a voice acknowledge her own inability to deal with confrontation and offering a ‘sorry not sorry’ apology.
Linda Perry, who’s worked with the likes of Courtney Love, Adele and P!nk, was impressed by Lowen, and ended up using her song ‘Joyride’ on a soundtrack she curated for documentary Served Like A Girl and has since started working with the 24 year old.
The single comes off the back of a busy start to the year for LION. Without releasing any music she’s already garnering support from her husky but powerful live sets, with support slots for Albert Hammond Jnr, and The Vaccines, touring with Isaac Gracie, as well as recently announced GIRLI. She also performed at this year’s SXSW in Austin, Texas and will be performing at The Great Escape in May.

Screw yr courage to the sticking place and fire up those vocal cords – all-female live Fall karaoke band The Fallen Women are once again inviting you to come and have a go if you think you’re MES enough! All are welcome, from seasoned performers to those who’ve never been on stage before or even sung a note. We provide lyric sheets if you want them, and compere Matt will be on hand to help you with any tricky cues.
Pick from a repertoire of 30 songs including Totally Wired, Touch Sensitive, Rowche Rumble, Blindness, Theme From Sparta FC #2 and Big New Prinz (full list can be found on Twitter: @thefallenwomen).
As in December, half the songs will be released beforehand and half will be held back to be issued on a first come, first served basis at the gig.

An all-girl celebration of The Monks, proto-krautrock garage punkers formed by a gang of American GIs stationed in Germany who legendarily sported tonsures and nooses on stage.
Ye Nuns send witchy, six-part harmonies crashing over scratchy guitars, layer on evil fuzz bass and add pounding drums. Lead vocals screech and soar. Electric banjo hacks relentlessly. Vintage keyboard sounds stab. Yet it’s still music that puts grins on faces and gets feet moving.
THEE DAGGER DEBS are three girls brought together by their love of 60s garage and British R’n’B, pub rock and proto punk. The Pirates (with Johnny Kidd and without), Eddie and the Hot Rods, Dr Feelgood, Nine Below Zero, Hurriganes, Count Bishops, MC5, Thin Lizzy, Slade and The Stranglers -to name a few- always feature heavily in their record boxes.
