Maarja Nuut & Ruum

+ Ola Szmidt

Sunday 2nd December

Estonian duo Maarja Nuut & Ruum operate in a musical interzone; connecting the deep-rooted, intuitive worldview of days past with the hyper-mediated realities and seemingly limitless technological possibilities of the present and future. Their debut album is a tour de force of sonic dexterity, where Ruum’s abstract electronic framework beautifully complements Nuut’s atavistic melodies. The album will be announced soon and is due to be released this Autumn on FatCat’s 130701 imprint.

Fontaines D.C

Wednesday 5th December

Fontaines D.C. met as a quintet in Dublin, influenced and driven in equal measure by the rich history of their hometown’s counter-culture, their response has been to make concise and immediately authentic indie-punk that has done anything but fall on deaf ears.

The last nine months have seen Fontaines D.C. release three hotly received double A-side singles, all of which were named as singles of the week by Rough Trade, and garnered early support from the likes of Steve Lamacq and others on BBC 6 Music, as well as earning feature space from every major Irish publication. Similarly, the band have played a number of shows across Europe, Ireland and the UK earning a reputation for their brooding and trenchant live performances, supporting the likes of The Horrors, Girl Band and The Lemon Twigs, as well as playing festival slots at Electric Picnic, Hard Working Class Heroes and Other Voices.

Previous singles such as ‘Liberty Belle’ and ‘Hurricane Laughter’ call to mind the likes of the Modern Lovers, The Fall, Iggy Pop and The Strokes, seamlessly blending immediate lyrical hooks with melodic golden-era indie instrumentation, and ‘70s Stooges punk thrust, all of which is strewn with defiant rock and roll overtones. On their new AA Side Single ‘Chequeless Reckless/ Boys In The Better Land” the band have decided to delve even deeper into their influences (which they personally cite as spanning from The La’s, to The Pogues to Buddy Holly) employing hypnotic, kraut-rock infused cyclical riffs, whilst channelling Dublin into their concise and often-unassumingly poetic lyrics with a distinctive gritty Irish drawl.

Mellah

+ Pizzagirl + Harlea

Thursday 6th December

South London multi-instrumentalist Mellah releases Middle England, his new EP. The follow up to 2017’s debut soul-searching Liminality EP. Includes the tracks Paseo, Numb and the James Ford produced Cigarette Lighter. Throughout the EP, the only two constants are Ramsden’s vulnerable, querulous yet weirdly authoritative vocals and his liquid guitar playing. He and his instrument constantly sound on the verge of offering you outside for a fight or bursting into tears – which, as you know, is true of all the best rock. For fans of Leonard Cohen, Yellow Days and Robert Wyatt. – Rough Trade

+ DJ Marco Pierre White Christmas in the club // Jordan Telegram playing records in the main bar til 3am

Honey Lung

+ Big Society + Fine Creatures

Monday 7th December

“Only 90’s kids remember the last tides of Thatcherism razing the country to the ground, and the nervous cultural climate that gave way to Size Zero and the corporatisation of club culture, but at least there were banging rock tunes.

London’s Honey Lung come fully formed, not old enough to have fully lived the 90s, but still able to capture the glittering remnants, a sensitive yet muscular rock beast with a love of shoegaze, Smashing Pumpkins, and Ash’s first album. Riffs are repeated ad infinitum, but with enough care that they never overpower, always floating delicately above the rhythm section, and Kind of Alone is as much a breeze as it is a head rush.

Perfect V is a storm of an opener, obviously referencing the Pumpkins’ Cherub Rock, but if you’re going to ape someone, ape the best. Jamie Batten’s vocals are pronounced and obvious, and he knows his way around a mammoth chorus hook. He navigates his guitar round melodies in the last half in an epic build-up of punk energy. End of Time is a power pop gem, reminiscent of Feeder in their underrated heyday.

Great Lake Swimmers

Tuesday 11th December

2018 marks the 15th anniversary of Great Lake Swimmers. Over seven albums, multiple EPs, live broadcasts, and reissues, the Toronto-based project led by singer-songwriter Tony Dekker has established itself as a beloved indie folk act in their native Canada and beyond. The CBC has called them “a national treasure” while their music has taken them around the world, sharing a sound that is at once familiar and distinct, using the tools of folk music as the starting point to delve deeper.

Liela Moss

Wednesday 12th December

As lead singer of The Duke Spirit Liela Moss was an arresting, powerful presence. Now working as a solo artist, she has retained that intensity, but opted to express it in some rather different directions on new album ‘My Name Is Safe In Your Mouth’.

Out on November 9th, it was largely constructed in Somerset, with the beautiful English countryside acting as an appropriately inspirational backdrop to the recordings.

New song ‘Wild As Fire’ is online, with its dappled psychedelic qualities matched to an intimate vocal from Leila.

Hard Skin

+ Cyanide Pills + Backstreet Abortion

Friday 14th December

“Just the word “Skinhead” evokes troubling connotations. Aux.Out. contributor Sam Lefebvre argues that Hark Skin’s satirical take on the Oi! genre, featuring all-female guest vocalists like Joanna Newsom and Alela Diane, asks for not only Oi!, but all art to be considered on its own terms.

James Yorkston

Wednesday 19th December

An old-fashioned storyteller blessed with a rare gift for melody and mood, the Scotsman was an important early member of the Fife-based Fence Collective, a loose collection of like-minded artists which also includes KT Tunstall, King Creosote and Lone Pigeon among its alumni. Roaring The Gospel, Yorkston’s fourth album, may be comprised of EP tracks, overseas releases and new material, but unlike some collections of this type, the quality on offer here is consistently high.
